Papist propaganda: “The infinite value of the Holy Mass”

It can, at times, be more than a little frustrating for the Christian to interact with a Roman Catholic over the official teachings of Romanism. I am sure I am not the only who has been met with a startled reaction when, while attempting to refute Rome’s false gospel and abominable heresies, I am confronted with a look of disgust that I would dare misrepresent the teachings of Holy Mother Church. Perhaps we should not be surprised that the average Roman Catholic today is oblivious to the decrees and anathemas of the Council of Trent, for example. After all, for the average papist, it is usually superstition and tradition that keeps him in the clutches of antichrist. Ritualism reigns and doctrine divides. Besides, even the current Jesuit pope regularly makes statements that make us wonder if he is even familiar with the official dogmas of that city on seven hills.

I don’t think it is too much to ask, however, that the devoted papist have at least a general familiarity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1994). The Scarlet Harlot has gone out of its way to make this information available to its members, often by way of short tracts or booklets available in the foyer just outside the Unholy of Unholies. That being the case, I thought it might be helpful to make some of those tracts available here so that Protestants—instead of quoting the text of a dense sixteenth-century document—can perhaps reference the more readily available and familiar literature as we seek to evangelize our Roman Catholic friends.

Below are scanned images of “The Infinite Value of the Holy Mass”. The tract speaks for itself. It even provides the reader with paragraph references to the Catholic Catechism. As any one of Christ’s redeemed can see, there are numerous blasphemous and heretical statements in this short tract. Just a few observations:

It recognizes that the Mass is indeed a sacrifice (something which so many Roman Catholics deny).

The Mass is said to make atonement and reparation for sin.

The doctrine of purgatory is affirmed.

Christ is called a “Victim”. See John O’Brien’s use of the word in The sacrifice of the Mass and the blasphemous claims of of the Roman Catholic priesthood

Not one reference is made to Scripture in support of the Romish Mass.

The tract is published “with Ecclesiastical Approval”.

  • I always said that Catholics are the toughest people to share the Gospel with. They have a foundation albeit a false one, with the teachings of Christ but they are enslaved to Rome’s works based idolatrous blasphemies. This in turn causes them to shut down to any evangelization attempts due to them falsely believing they are no different than the Bible believing Protestant. Those who know salvation by grace ought to love them and sincerely desire to see them shed the bondage of Rome and repent.

    • Agreed. Notice the quote by M. Hobart Seymour I recently added to the homepage which emphasizes the Protestant’s hatred not for Catholics but for Romish dogma. I have had to point out again and again that we are not looking to put unnecessary enmity between ourselves and Roman Catholics, yet we are troubled that Rome’s false gospel keeps Catholics at enmity with God. You are right that we must pray for them as we expose Rome’s false gospel for what it is, a damnable counterfeit built on a seductive mixture of truth with error.
